How Does the Headcollar Work?

The Gentle Leader Headcollar works with your dog's natural instincts which unfortunately is to move into pressure. This is why they instinctively tend to pull with a standard collar. To end that tug-of-war, you need to employ the "pack leader" approach which effectively lets your dog know who's the boss! (that would be you!) Gentle Leader has brilliantly figured out how to do just that through the design of their headcollar. Briefly, this is how it works.

NOSE LOOP - One of the ways the "pack leader" demonstrates his position is by gently but firmly grasping a subordinate's muzzle in his mouth. This is a clear signal regarding who's the boss! (that would be you!) The Gentle Leader's Nose Loop encircles your dog's muzzle in this same manner, therefore, letting him know in his own language that YOU are his leader. Also, when you lead your dog with the nose loop, you are actually steering the body by steering his nose. This is an especially good technique for getting him to look at you! He has to because you're in control!

NECK STRAP - Have you ever noticed how puppies seem to melt into relaxation when their mother picks them up at the back of the neck? The Gentle Leader's Neck Strap also applies pressure to the back of the neck working with your dog's natural instinct to relax, thus reducing his drive to pull forward.

In conclusion, the Gentle Leader Headcollar eliminates leash pulling because when when you steer your dog's body by steering his nose, it makes it virtually impossible for him to drag you down the street. Please note: The Nose Loop is NOT a muzzle. When properly fit, your dog is free to eat, drink, bark, pant or fetch except when you pull on the leash to close his mouth.

PROPER FIT FOR THE HEADCOLLAR IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST! If not fitted properly, it will not work to its maximum benefit and may actually cause your dog to paw or resist. The proper fit of the Nose Loop is dependent on the fit of the Neck Strap, so you must fit the neck strap first.
