 Unlike other collars, the measurement taken for the Premier Collar is at the top of the neck, directly behind your dog's ears. This corresponds with the size of the collar in the closed position, so it is not necessary to "add inches."  The Gentle Leader Headcollar fits differently than other collars. Without a proper fit, you may experience unnecessary problems - pawing, rubbing, resistance or chafing of the nose. The NOSE LOOP needs to fit as loose and comfortable as possible, moving freely from just in front of the eyes to the beginning of the fleshy part of the nose, yet not so loose that it can fall off. A good guideline to know if it's fit properly is if your dog can freely open his mouth to fetch a ball or eat. The proper fit of the nose loop is dependant on the proper fit of the NECK STRAP which should fit high at the top of the neck (touching the skull) and snug enough that only one finger can squeeze underneath. You do not want it to be able to rotate. When properly fitted as viewed from the side, the Gentle Leader Headcollar will resemble a "V" (for victory), not an "L" (for loser). FITTING STEP BY STEP:
1. Attach leash to Control Ring (fig. A). 2. Open Neck Strap and hold one end in each hand. Nose Loop should hang down. (Fig. B) 3. Prefit Neck Strap high on neck touching base of the skull in back and Center Ring Bar just above the Adam's apple in front. (Fig. C-1). Neck Strap fits snug as described above (Fig. C-2). 4. Take Neck Strap off your dog and slide adjustable clamp down to the Control Ring (as in Fig. A) Snap is designed to lock in place. 5. Pull Nose Loop up through Center Bar Ring (Fig. D) 6. With dog at your side or between legs, reach under dog's head to slip Nose Loop onto base of muzzle (Fig. E-1) Snap Neck Strap should be high on neck at prefitted position (Fig. E-2). 7. Make final adjustments to Nose Loop. It should be behind corners of mouth. Slide snap clamp up or down to adjust fit (Fig. F-1). Pinch Nose Loop underneath snap clamp and test your fit by pulling it forward as far as it will go (Fig. F-2). When it touches the beginning of the fleshy part of the nose, but is not so loose that you can pull it off, congratulations! You're there! Size of the collar itself is determined by weight of your dog.
Collar and Nose Loop Sizing Guide: Petite - under 5 lbs., Small - 5-25 lbs., Medium - 25-60 lbs., Large - 60-130 lbs., XL - over 130 lbs.
Nose Loop Size: 3/8" narrow is standard for all sizes except XL which is 5/8" width. Can order 5/9" for Medium and Large by request only. |
